What is CITES?

CITES stands for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. It is an international agreement between governments that regulates the international trade of endangered and protected wildlife to ensure their survival in the wild.

More than 180 countries, including Thailand, participate in CITES and follow its regulations for importing and exporting protected animal and plant species.

Why is CITES Important?

CITES helps prevent:

• Illegal wildlife trade

• Overexploitation of endangered species

• Wildlife trafficking

• Unsustainable international trade

The goal is to allow legal trade while protecting species that may become threatened with extinction.

CITES Appendices

Appendix I

Species at the highest risk of extinction.

• International commercial trade is generally prohibited.

• Trade is allowed only under exceptional circumstances with special permits.

Appendix II

Species that are not currently endangered but may become threatened if trade is not controlled.

• International trade is permitted with the appropriate CITES permits.

• This is the most common category for many reptiles, parrots, turtles, and exotic pets.

Appendix III

Species protected by individual countries.

• International trade is allowed with the required export certificates or permits from the country requesting protection.

Animals That May Require CITES

Examples include:

• Parrots

• Macaws

• Cockatoos

• Tortoises

• Turtles

• Snakes

• Lizards

• Crocodilians

• Primates

• Big cats

• Some exotic mammals

• Certain corals and aquatic species

Not every exotic pet is listed under CITES, so requirements depend on the species.

Before Travelling

If your pet is an exotic species, you should confirm:

• Whether it is listed under CITES

• Whether CITES export or import permits are required

• Airline acceptance

• Destination country regulations

• Additional government approvals

Failure to obtain the correct permits may result in delays, confiscation, fines, or refusal of entry.
