International commercial trade in these species is generally prohibited. Trade is permitted only in exceptional circumstances, such as scientific research, conservation programs, or other purposes approved by the relevant government authorities.

Can These Animals Travel?

In some cases, yes—but only when all legal requirements have been met.

• Certain non-commercial personal movements where permitted

Each case is reviewed individually by the authorities of both the exporting and importing countries.

Important Information

Owning an Appendix I animal does not automatically allow international travel.

Additional permits, approvals, and supporting documentation are normally required, and some countries may prohibit import or export regardless of CITES permits.

Airlines may also have their own policies regarding the transport of Appendix I species.
